What You Should Know About Winter Tire Pressure

posted on

It’s that time of year again. The snow is falling, your snow blower is in the garage, and your parka is hanging on the coat rack. Yup, it’s winter in Wisconsin, and it’s cold outside!

And when it’s cold, your vehicle needs a little extra care, too. From letting it warm up a little before driving it, to cleaning the salt off the exterior every now and again, you want to make sure you’re taking care of your vehicle’s specific winter needs.

Your tires might need some TLC, too!

Did you know that tire pressure tends to decrease as the weather gets cooler?

It’s estimated that tires lose around one psi for every 10 degrees the temperature goes down. So it’s very likely your tires may fall below the standard range in the frigid temperatures of mid-winter. If you aren’t sure what the ideal pressure for your vehicle’s tires is, you can find the information in your owner’s manual.

Many newer vehicles have a tire pressure sensor to let you know when your tire pressure is low. While those sensors are great, we recommend you regularly check your tire pressure and fill up your tires before your car needs to tell you to!

You can easily check your pressure at home with a pressure gauge. Make sure your tires are cold when you check the pressure. If you find your pressure is low, you can easily add air at home using an air compressor. Many gas stations also have air compressors you can use for free to fill up your tires.

Remember that along with all your other car or tire service needs, you can always stop by Schierl Tire and Service to have your tire pressure checked or air added to your tires! We love cars and we’re eager to help!
