Tips for Holiday Travel

Schierl Tire & Service Tips for safe holiday and winter travel

The tree’s decorated, the gifts are wrapped, and the kids have been dressed in their finest green sweaters and red dresses. Go ahead, sigh with relief – the weeks of stressful holiday preparation are over. All that’s left to do is drive to grandma’s house and enjoy the company of family...and eat way too many tree-shaped sugar cookies while you do so!

But, before your family piles into the car and braves the Wisconsin winter -- and all the ice, snow, and low temperatures that come with it -- check out these important tips for holiday travel.

These guidelines will not only keep your family safer on those Wisconsin winter roads... they’ll also keep Aunt Carol’s fragile gift from sliding around in the trunk and help the side dishes stay in their containers (instead of sloshing about all over the interior of your car!).

With holiday road travel numbers ever on the rise, be sure to read this list carefully:

1. Plan Ahead

Before heading out, make sure you’ve done your homework. Check the weather, look at road conditions, and have alternative routes in mind. Tell a loved one when you’re leaving, where you’re going, and when to expect you at your destination.

Whether a stretch of highway is icy or out-of-town traffic has you moving at snail speed, always have a backup plan to safely get you where you’re trying to go.

2. Be Prepared

Anytime you’re heading out in wintery conditions, make sure you’ve got an emergency road kit in the car.

Jumper cables? Check.

Ice scraper, snow brush, warm clothes and blankets? Check, check and check.

A flashlight, shovel, and kitty litter? Check, check, check. Kitty litter is great for traction should you find yourself stuck — sprinkling some beneath the tires of a stranded vehicle can help you drive out of an icy patch on the road.

3. Check the Tread!

Last but definitely not least, check your tires before you travel. If your tires are worn and bald, they won’t do you much good on ice and snow-ridden roads. Tire traction is important year-round, but it’s especially crucial during nasty Wisconsin winter conditions. If your tires are too old or worn, be sure to replace them before you embark on your holiday travels. There are many great deals and sales happening at your local Schierl Tire & Service this season...stop on in and we’ll help get your car geared up for the trip to Grandma’s!

From your local Schierl Tire & Service team, happy holidays and enjoy the season...safely!
