Schierl Tire & Service Winter Driving safety tips

Wisconsin winters are not something to take lightly…especially when it comes to travel. Here at Schierl Tire & Service, we want you and your family to be as safe as possible this winter, so we’ve put together a few tips to help you successfully navigate the soon-to-be icy roads and freezing temperatures.

First off, make sure you’ve got an emergency kit in your vehicle. This should contain things that would help you in a variety of car-related situations, such as sliding off the road, finding your battery dead, or even breaking down outside of town. So, what should be in your emergency kit? Blankets, mittens, and other winter gear is essential in case you become stranded in freezing temperatures while waiting for help to arrive. Jumper cables are always a necessity, too. And don’t forget the kitty litter and shovel to aid in traction and snow removal if you become stuck due to ice and snow.

A flashlight, duct tape, and tow straps are a few more items you should never drive without. Always have a charged cell phone and let loved ones know where you’re driving and when to expect your return. These simple things can help you out of a tight spot when you experience car trouble, especially in winter months.

Checking your tires for proper air pressure levels is a great habit to get into year-round. But, this is even more important during times of dropping temperatures...AKA winter! PSI, which stands for “pounds per square inch”, is a measurement used to quantify the air pressure in tires. PSI can easily decrease in cold weather, so regular air pressure checks are needed to maintain optimal levels within your tires. We suggest checking this twice a month to ensure your tires function to the best of their ability. Plus, properly-pressurized tires will wear more evenly, contribute to a smooth ride, increase fuel efficiency and promote safer travel in inclement weather.

When traveling in winter conditions, please practice patience. Maintaining adequate distance between your vehicle and those around you is imperative when braving slick road conditions. Taking it slow is something we can’t stress enough – be prepared to come to a stop at any given time. Even when the roads seem safe, hidden ice and snow patches can pop up when you least expect it. You know what they say, better safe than sorry! The wellbeing of you and your family is well worth the few extra minutes it takes to drive patiently during the subpar road conditions that accompany winters in Wisconsin.

Additionally, one of the best ways to ensure proper handling in inclement weather is to have adequate tires on your vehicle. If your tires are old, bald, or just plain bad at handling ice and snow, now is the time for a new set. But, where can you get the best deal on tires? Not only are we passionate about the safe travel of you and your loved ones, but we also care about offering the best tires and services at the best prices!
