Use current location
Whether you just got your license, or you’ve been driving for decades, there are some essentials every car owner should have on hand before hitting the wide-open road.
Every driver has their own take on car essentials. Have kids? Don’t leave home without wet wipes! Have a pet? Keep a pop-up water tray around for your furry friend. But some items are universal, and they are a must have for every driver.
These can help you when you get stuck in a bad situation or just come in handy when... we’ll we don’t know! That’s the whole point.
First Aid Kit
A simple first-aid kit is an inexpensive item that can help save the day. Accidents can happen anytime, and real danger might just be around the corner. Drivers often overlook this necessary item, but it’s especially important if you are in a remote area without nearby help. Placing basic medicines and bandages (and pro tip: dental floss) in your kit can be a lifesaver for your passengers and yourself. For more information on what should be in your first aid kit check this out!
A Lug Wrench and Jack with a Spare Tire
One of the most frequent problems you’ll encounter on the road is getting a flat tire. So, it’s important that you always keep an inflated spare in your car, as well as the lug wrench and jack you’ll need to actually use it! That way you can change your tire without having to wait on help. If you bought a used or inexpensive car, you may have a substandard (or missing!) spare tire. Make sure you locate your spare...before you need it!
A Bottle of Windshield Wiper Fluid
Windshield wiper fluid is important, no matter where you’re driving. Accidents are more likely if you can’t see clearly. And while we’re on the subject, do you know the last time you had your windshield wipers changed? Check out our Winter Driving Tips for more information on wiper blades and fluid.
Jumper Cables
There’s no bigger frustration for a driver than turning the key and finding out that your car won’t start. However, if you’ve made the effort to get jumper cables and have practiced jumpstarting a battery, your car and your day won’t be out of commission for long. These days you can even purchase portable battery jump-start kits to keep in your car, for jump-starting your car (or even just recharging your phone!). For more information check out this blog!
Some people also store extra blankets, a flashlight, a phone charger, and WD-40 in their car. A lot of dedicated DIY-ers keep a small toolkit in their car to cover any minor repair situation, but you don’t need to go that far. Any useful equipment or extra parts (such as a headlight bulb) you can include in your car will make your trip safer and more comfortable, especially if you’re planning a long road trip or traveling to an isolated area. Being prepared with knowledge and a few basic spare parts can turn a major delay into a brief hiccup.
